The 2008 GSO Wrap Up. |
|
Yes -it’s all ‘done and dusted’ for another year.
The 2008 Garden State Disc Golf Open has been played and won.
A small but committed field braved Melbourne’s wintery weather. South westerly winds gusted across the Whittlesea course, and on occasions bringing some smattering of drizzle. All this was broken up with bursts of sun -light which gave little warmth except if one found a dense enough wind break, such as the sheltered corner of the pro shop. And so it was that the fearless 8 braved the elements in their shorts and tee shirts (yes you read it right!). The ladies were a little more sensible settling for more robust cold weather attire. Topping all the fashion stakes was Dr Gregg resplendent in his (as he described it) ‘Bobby Jones’ **plus fours’ outfit (very chic)
The first round is always a jostle for position and there were some great throws made by all players to gain an advantage. Jarreth Sweetten was no exception. Having just returned from 5 weeks in Japan and playing in the Japan Disc Golf Open, - (an enormous experience for any up and coming player) he showed a great deal of flair in his approach to throwing. Keep an eye on this bloke as he is going to be good.
At the end of the first day’s play it was Ian Bycroft who had shown the bigger boys how to play the tricky conditions with a fine 2 under par 68, followed by Dan Hartley and Jarreth Sweetten 5 shots in arrears.
Surprisingly the second days play was some what warmest to start with but the promise of heavy rains later in the day appeared ominously on the western horizon. This was going to be touch and go for a dry finish.
The two groups of four were rearranged so that the leading four teed of first which allowed faster play and minimum time wastage by all players.00000000000000000000000000000
Again play was excellent and the leaders jostled for that number one position. Ian’s 5 stroke advantage wasn’t to last and was brought back the mob with some errant shots early on in the piece
The 2006 Open winner Dan Hartley came in to his own and showed his arm strength was his secret weapon. A 7 shot gain over his first round score had him the 2008 winner by 2 shots over first round leader Ian Bycroft. Dan also collected the Longest Drive and Men’s Div. trophies. . Not a bad effort. Well don Dan. Paul Arden got NTP on the 17th (day two)
Last but not least congrats to the ladies who played , both of whom have had lay offs due to injury or work schedules. Well done Cassie for the win and Kathrin in taking the challenge up to the winner.
That's it folks see you at the next tournament…… Ooo-Rooo |
