Due Process   -- To do or Not to do

I read an interesting e mail the other day.  At first reading one may see it as more necessary information valid for the minority as interesting.

The author of this e mail was asking the members of a ‘national body’ to nominate for two vacant positions on its ‘committee of management’ ---- All very correct and seemingly hum drum!!

Not so however, ---- the author went on to say that one person (whom he named) had already expressed an interest in one of the vacant positions----.

The author went on it say that it world seem inappropriate to have any sort of AGM  as this position could already be filled by this person and there was difficulties in getting remaining committee members to such a meeting  (these included himself and another person who was now stationed O/S)

May I remind the author that Australia is a democracy and not an African or Latin American dictatorship? We have the right to express our like or dislike through rules and regulations that are termed “Through due process’

You are taking away the rights of your members to vote and in turn defacing your own commitment to the group and sport you represent.

However as your group is not registered State wise or Federally and holds neither an  Incorporated Body registration or ARB number you and your fellow committee members are open to run ‘rough shod’ over your membership?+

Financial Instability.

The current financial crisis is going to hit everyone and every business on the planet in some way.

Disc golf in Australia will not be immune to the slowing down of our economy and any plans that some people may have of obtaining favourable grant to install a DG course will find a large shortage of funds available to do so.  History has shown that in these sorts of times money for spending on Sport & Recreational activities get shelved very quickly and stay that way long after the crisis is over and done with.

The costs involved in setting up a DF course are relatively cheap but ‘a dollar saved here is a dollar spent better on some thing more worthy while. The same can also be said for the player / purchaser of equipment. Those discs you purchased a couple of months ago are now more expensive with the AUD sliding closer to the 50 cents US.

For example a standard plastic golf disc that was $10 US ($12 AUD) a couple of months ago will now cost you nearly $20AUD (not inc. Freight & Handling, etc.), and of course any thing imported will rise by up to around 50% [plus. How long you may ask? Who knows – possibly 3 years or more and it’s a fair bet that prices will l remain at the higher end of the scale rather than embrace a low structure as is the wish of many.

It’s a gloomy outlook is it not? – But if you accept what is and has happened then it’s much easier to formulate a plan for the move forward. On the other hand perhaps the ‘wait and see’ approach is the best way as it has been well tried before in the past, and a start from scratch is no big deal?

I believe this is a ‘losers’ approach. Now is the time we need to work much harder at getting Disc Golf known and played. There are places in our region that can take up a disc golf course (and they aren’t local government parks). There are people out there who’re playing what they think IS disc golf and yet play a ‘back yard’ variety, which is so ‘old hat’ it should be pensioned of.

So stop looking for those ‘Free’ handouts from councils, it will be some time before they become available again - if ever – and that’s no good for moving the sport forward.

Disc Golf is a great game, let’s keep it moving forward
